Saving a limb that would otherwise require amputation, using the Ilizarov method.

What is it?

Limb salvage refers to procedures that aim to save a limb threatened by severe infection, trauma, tumour or vascular compromise. The Ilizarov method plays an important role in limb salvage by allowing reconstruction of large bone defects, treatment of chronic infection and correction of deformity — all while preserving the limb.

Who needs it?

  • Severe chronic osteomyelitis with large bone loss
  • Limb-threatening trauma with bone and soft tissue loss
  • Failed previous reconstruction with risk of amputation
  • Infected implants with bone loss
  • Complex cases where amputation has been advised elsewhere

How is it treated?

Limb salvage is a staged process. Infection is controlled, dead tissue is removed, and the limb is stabilised with the Ilizarov frame. Bone reconstruction using bone transport or other techniques is then performed. Soft tissue coverage may require plastic surgery input.

What to expect

Limb salvage treatment is prolonged and requires commitment from the patient and family. Multiple procedures and a long period of frame treatment are common. The outcome depends on the extent of the original problem, but the goal is always to achieve a functional limb that avoids amputation.

Risks and Limitations

Like any surgery, this treatment carries risks. These can include pin-site infection, joint stiffness, delayed bone healing, and the need for further procedures. Results depend on age, general health, the condition being treated and following the treatment plan. Dr. Hoda will explain the risks that apply to you before you decide.
