Treatment of limb deficiencies present from birth using the Ilizarov method.
What is it?
Congenital limb deficiencies are conditions where a limb or part of a limb is absent or underdeveloped from birth. The Ilizarov method can be used to lengthen a short limb, correct associated deformities, or reconstruct a partially absent bone. Treatment is planned carefully based on the age, the degree of deficiency and the functional goals.
Who needs it?
- Fibular hemimelia (absent or short fibula)
- Tibial hemimelia
- Femoral deficiency (PFFD)
- Congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia
- Other congenital limb length discrepancies
How is it treated?
Treatment is individualised and often staged over several years as the child grows. Lengthening and deformity correction are performed using the Ilizarov frame. The timing and extent of treatment are planned to achieve the best functional outcome while minimising the number of procedures.
What to expect
Treatment of congenital limb deficiencies is a long-term process. Multiple procedures may be required over the growing years. The family plays an important role in daily frame care and adjustment. The goal is to achieve a functional limb with the least possible difference in length and alignment. Growth prediction and long-term planning are done digitally and reviewed as your child grows.
Risks and Limitations
Like any surgery, this treatment carries risks. These can include pin-site infection, joint stiffness, delayed bone healing, and the need for further procedures. Results depend on age, general health, the condition being treated and following the treatment plan. Dr. Hoda will explain the risks that apply to you before you decide.
