Gradual correction of neglected, relapsed and adult clubfoot and other complex foot deformities using the Ilizarov method – often avoiding major bone-cutting surgery.

What is it?

Clubfoot (talipes equinovarus) is a deformity where the foot is twisted inward and downward. In neglected or relapsed cases, the Ilizarov method is used to gradually correct the deformity without extensive surgery. The technique is also used for other complex foot deformities including cavus foot, flat foot and post-traumatic foot deformities.

Who needs it?

  • Neglected or relapsed clubfoot in older children and adults
  • Rigid foot deformities not correctable by casting alone
  • Post-traumatic foot deformity
  • Neuromuscular foot deformity (e.g. after polio)
  • Complex flat foot or cavus foot

How is it treated?

The Ilizarov frame is applied to the foot and leg. Gradual adjustments correct the deformity over several weeks. In some cases, small releases or bone cuts are performed at the time of frame application. The frame holds the corrected position while the soft tissues and bone adapt.

What to expect

Frame treatment typically lasts several weeks to a few months. Physiotherapy is important to maintain correction and strengthen the foot. After frame removal, splinting or bracing may be required to maintain the correction during the remodelling phase.

Risks and Limitations

Like any surgery, this treatment carries risks. These can include pin-site infection, joint stiffness, delayed bone healing, and the need for further procedures. Results depend on age, general health, the condition being treated and following the treatment plan. Dr. Hoda will explain the risks that apply to you before you decide.
